Supply on a schedule

The Bitcoin halving, in one minute

Every 210,000 blocks, roughly four years, the reward miners earn for validating Bitcoin transactions is cut in half. It is written into the code. Nobody votes on it.

Why it exists

Bitcoin's supply is capped at 21 million coins. The halving slows the release of new coins over time, so the last bitcoin is not mined until around 2140. Scarcity is the design, not an accident.

The schedule so far

2012: 50 to 25 BTC. 2016: 25 to 12.5. 2020: 12.5 to 6.25. 2024: 6.25 to 3.125. The next halving, estimated April 2028, cuts the reward to 1.5625 BTC per block.

Why traders care

Each previous halving cut the flow of new supply in half while demand kept growing, and major bull markets followed within 12 to 18 months. Past cycles do not guarantee the next one, but the supply shock is mechanical, not speculative.

What it means for you

The halving is a known date, so markets price it in early. The edge is not knowing it is coming. The edge is understanding what it does to miner economics, supply, and sentiment before the crowd trades the headline.
