Big Figure

The first few digits of an exchange rate that dealers omit when quoting prices. For EUR/USD at 1.1050, the big figure is 1.10.

Definition

The big figure refers to the first two or three digits of an exchange rate quote, which are typically dropped in interbank dealing because both parties already know them. If EUR/USD is trading at 1.1050, dealers would quote "50/52" rather than the full price. When the big figure changes (e.g., from 1.10 to 1.11), it is psychologically significant and often acts as support or resistance.

How It Works

  • Full quote: 1.1050/1.1052. Big figure: 1.10. Dealing quote: "50/52"
  • Dealers and interbank traders drop the big figure because it is implied during the trading session
  • Big figure levels (1.1000, 1.1100, etc.) often attract orders and act as psychological barriers
  • Changes in the big figure can trigger stop-loss clusters and option barriers

Trading Tips

1

Watch for price reactions at big figure levels, especially double zeros (1.1000, 1.2000)

2

Round numbers attract orders and options barriers, creating visible support and resistance

3

When trading news events, big figure levels can act as magnets for price after volatile moves
