How Low Spreads Actually Work

A 0.0 pip quote is a marketing number until you know the account type, the commission and the execution behind it.

Raw vs standard accounts

Raw accounts quote spreads from 0.0 pips and charge a separate commission per lot. Standard accounts carry no commission but a wider spread, typically around one pip on majors. Both can be the cheaper option depending on how often you trade and how large your positions are.

The commission is the catch

When you see 0.0 pips, ask what the commission is. It is usually a fixed amount per lot per side, and it is where the broker makes its money on raw accounts. Add it to the spread before comparing brokers, or you are comparing half the bill.

Execution beats the quote

A tight spread means nothing if orders slip at news time. ECN and STP brokers pass orders to liquidity providers; market makers take the other side. Check the execution model, the requote policy and the slippage record before you deposit.

ASIC protection still applies

Tight spreads do not change the rules. ASIC caps retail leverage at 30:1 on FX majors, requires negative balance protection and segregated client funds, and every licensed broker must offer AFCA dispute resolution.

What Separates a Genuinely Low-Cost Broker

Four things we check before a broker makes this list. The headline spread is not the bill.

Total cost over headline cost

Raw spreads from 0.0 pips sound free. The real bill is spread plus commission per lot, swap charged daily on positions held overnight, and any inactivity fee. Add them up at your trading volume before choosing. Compare the two tightest spreaders side by side to see how this works.

Execution quality

A tight spread means nothing if orders slip at news time. ECN and STP brokers pass orders to liquidity providers; market makers take the other side of your trade. Check the execution model and the requote policy before you deposit.

Platform fit

MT4, MT5, cTrader and TradingView cover most traders. Test the platform on a demo account first, because the chart you analyse on is the chart you trade on. A broker that only offers a clunky proprietary platform should justify why.

Support when markets move

Australian trading hours matter. Check whether support is staffed during Sydney and Melbourne sessions, not just London and New York. A weekend margin call with no one answering is a real cost.

FAQ

Low Spread Forex Brokers: Your Questions

Straight answers on raw spreads, commissions, safety and leverage for Australian forex traders.

Which forex broker has the lowest spreads in Australia?

IC Markets and Pepperstone quote raw spreads from 0.0 pips on their raw accounts, with Axi, Admiral Markets, Vantage, GO Markets, Eightcap and FP Markets also at 0.0 pips. Raw accounts charge a separate commission per lot. For casual traders, XM at 0.6 pips and AvaTrade at 0.9 pips keep the all-in cost low without commissions. The lowest headline spread is not automatically the cheapest bill - it depends on your trading volume.

What does a 0.0 pip spread actually cost?

A 0.0 pip raw spread is not free. The broker charges a commission per lot per side instead of building its margin into the spread. A raw account is usually cheaper for high-volume traders, while a standard account with no commission can work out better for small positions. Add the spread, the commission, overnight swap and any inactivity fee at your trading volume before you choose.

Are low-spread brokers safe?

A tight spread says nothing about safety. Every broker in the table above holds a current ASIC licence, which brings negative balance protection, segregated client funds and AFCA dispute resolution. Verify any licence number on ASIC Connect (connectonline.asic.gov.au) before depositing, and treat offshore brokers offering unusually tight spreads with extra caution.

Why do spreads widen during news events?

Liquidity providers pull quotes during major economic releases, and spreads widen to reflect the higher risk of slippage. A 0.0 pip quote on a quiet Tuesday can become 2 or 3 pips around the Fed or RBA announcement. Low-spread brokers are not exempt - check the requote and slippage policy if you trade news.

What is the best low-spread broker for beginners?

For beginners, AvaTrade and XM are the strongest picks: ASIC-regulated, low minimum deposits, no commission on standard accounts and platforms that are easier to learn on. IC Markets and Pepperstone have tighter raw spreads but commission-based pricing suits experienced traders who trade enough volume to offset it.

Can I scalp low spreads in Australia?

Yes. ASIC does not ban scalping, and raw accounts at IC Markets, Pepperstone, Axi and Vantage are built for it. Check the minimum stop distance, execution model (ECN or STP) and any restrictions on holding times before you rely on a broker for scalping.

How do I verify a broker's claimed spreads?

Open a demo account and compare live quotes across two or three brokers at the same moment. Spreads vary by account type, instrument and time of day, so a static number on a website is a starting point, not a promise. Read the Product Disclosure Statement for the actual fee schedule.

What leverage can I get on forex in Australia?

ASIC caps retail leverage at 30:1 on major currency pairs (AUD/USD, EUR/USD), 20:1 on minor pairs, equity indices and gold, 10:1 on other commodities, 5:1 on shares and 2:1 on crypto CFDs. The table above shows each broker's global maximum, but the ASIC cap applies to Australian retail clients regardless of what a broker advertises.
